Well, asians are technically a minority on any UC campus. However, Oakes is known to be the college for the minorities. This mostly means the latinos and African Americans. The stereotype of it is that it is “ghetto.”
The more studious kids are at Crown and Merrill. Yes, they are up a hill, but that is probably why there aren’t many parties there. Crown is known for being the nerdy college. There are a lot of computer nerds and Asian students.
Cowell actually has a lot of parties. I wouldn’t go there.
Definitely stay away from Porter.
I would put down on your list Crown, College 10, Merrill, College 9, or Stevenson.
More would depend on your intended career or major, and I resent that about Merrill and Crown. I live at Merrill and it is wonderful, the best choice I have ever made, besides choosing ucsc of course.

My major is currently Computer Science: Game Design, soon to change to Literature though with a possible minor in stats. I like Merrill because it is the most “in the woods,” in my opinion the prettiest
Porter more for theater/film majors/students, Crown for science/technology majors/students, though Oakes is “known” for being the most diverse racially, though there is respect for all minorities everywhere around campus. There are plenty of people on my dormfloor who are of minorities, and they are all cool
All in all, I would focus more on the major, though, what is your ideal major?
Plus, there are many positives to the 10-college system
oakes is supposed to be for minorities, but i think its totally dead and away from everything. go to college 9 or 10 definitely. they are the newest so they are very nice, they are the closest colleges to science hill, if your major involves science. definitely 9 or 10. believe me, you will be happy there.
Regardless of which college you go to, there will be something of everything. Porter is known and proud for being a bit off-beat, while Oakes is especially known for its diversity. If you like a central location try Cowell. Avoid Merrill and Crown, unless you like walking up huge hills all the time.
