The West Coast Santa Cruz Hotel, definitely. It used to be called the “Dream Inn” and we stayed there everytime we visited Santa Cruz when I was growing up….great memories. The location is perfect, even if it is a bit on the pricey side now. You may also want to look into the Casablanca Inn. Have a great time!!
Downtown is much cleaner and cheaper than the beach. Beach hotels smell really bad and are way overpriced.
You might also consider staying in Capitola. A very nice town to the south. There is much less of a tourist feel there.

Stay at the Ocean Pacific Lodge near the boardwalk.
It’s not too far from downtown, but very close to the beach and boardwalk. Inexpensive and still one of the better hotels in town. Nice size pool, big rooms and clean.
I use to take my kids to Santa Cruz every other year for a week, it’s one of the best spots for a vacation. Message me and I can give you plenty of ideas on things to do.
