Housing and food is pretty cheap in Austin, especially if you are going to have a roommate (you could probably find something for 300-400/month, plus a share of the bills (probably an additional 50-100/month or so, depending on the month)), and in my experience most places don’t need much of a deposit (like 1 months rent, instead of first/last/+a deposit that places charge in other cities). Also, if you have to start your own utility account, there can be deposits on those as well (300$ for the city of austin utilities), but you shouldn’t have to worry about that if you’re moving in with someone.
Your main concern would probably be having enough money to move, and having enough to last you until you find and start a job. I would recommend starting your job search now, since jobs can be tight here (plus the UT students just got back, so they are busy snapping up the part time jobs).
The site I used can compare any two zip codes from two states. I arbitrarily chose 95060 in Santa Cruz (column 1) and 78759 in Austin (column 2).

While I realize this does not give you a specific savings goal, perhaps it will give you some idea of the cost of living. Overall, you will find that salaries are comparable, but housing is a fraction of the cost (approximately 75% less than Santa Cruz.)

My husband (fiance at the time) moved from FL to CA to be with me and he saved around $3,000 or close to that amount. It took my husband about 6 months to find a job (the town I live in has about the same population as Santa Cruz). I think between $3,000 and $5,000 might be enough depending how much rent costs there. Good luck!
