No cattle at Davis, and no animals in your window at UCSC!
Deer occasionally will go by your window, however, and possums will turn up in your headlights at night, though.
The dorms at UCSC are quite distinct from each other. There are some fairly conventional hi-rise dorms (with quite unconventional people in them) at Porter, while there are smaller “houses” with fewer rooms at Stevenson. Kresge has two-story dorms but some “rooms” actually are a suite of several rooms and lofts for a group of seven students or so. Have you looked at the website? Could you visit during spring break?
The main thing that is different in terms of residential life at UCSC is the college system–the campus is broken up into colleges of 1500 students or so; pairs of two colleges have a dining hall, though most have apartments with kitchens as well. The colleges are humanizing–you feel as if you’re in a smaller place inside a large research university.

I heard certain dorms @ UC Davis smell like cattle. and UCSC prolly more cabin like dorms with like animals crossing through your window on a daily basis.
